There are lots of stars within 30 light years of our Sun. Here are the 10 closest.

NameDistance [light year]
Alpha Centauri 4.27
Barnard's Star 5.97
Wolf 359 7.56
BD +36 2147 8.12
Sirius 8.64
Luyten 726-8 8.93
Ross 154 9.45
Ross 248 10.32
epsilon Eridani 10.69
Luyten 789-6 10.79

I got this information from Introductory Astronomy & Astrophysics by Zeilik, Gregory, & Smith, 1992 (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich). Other introductory text book should also have lists of the closest and brightest stars. Good luck with your book!
