Dear Phyllis In my experience, lipomas tend to be slow growing, gradually increasing in size over months or years. They tend to be soft, squidgy painless things, usually end up no bigger than 2-3 cms in diameter (although I have occasionally seen bigger ones), and are extremely unlikely to turn nasty (i.e. cancerous). If any skin lump increases rapidly in size and is painful, I would suggest it is unlikely to be a lipoma, but should be examined by a medical practitioner for an accurate diagnosis. Best wishes Doc C-P
