Tsunamis form in response to things such as underwater landslides and earthquakes. They can occur just about anywhere along the shore of an ocean.

Hawaii, Alaska and Japan are known to experience tsunamis because the floor of the Pacific Ocean is more geologically active than some other areas, and therefore earthquakes occur there more frequently. It is not impossible, however, for a tsumani to occur on the east coast of the United States.

For more information on tsunamis, visit The West Coast & Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.
