Subject: What effect should ethidium bromide have on paramecium?

I am doing an experiement using ethidium bromide as a mutagen.  However, 
at first my paramecium grew to three time their normal size and a week 
later they were back to normal.  Upon testing them with KCl and BaCl they 
did react differently than the wildtype paramecium.  The onle explanation 
for this I can think of is the fact that they stopped synthesizing protein 
and were ready to die.  Do you have any other suggestions?
