Hi Penny,
Crude oils generally are characterized by the weight per volume of oil
measured as API Gravity. Crude oil API gravities range from 10 to 50, but
most fall in the 20 to 45 API gravity range. I guess you could then say
there are light and heavy crudes.
The main source of Crude Oil is recovered from drilling wells. There are
places in which the crude oil seeps to the surface, but these don't
produce enough crude for recovery.

For more information regarding Crude Oil see the American Petroleum
Institute website at http://www.api.org/edu
