Non oxygen bound hemoglobin has magnetic properties - and has a slight 
dipole moment.  Oxygen bound hemoglobin does not.  A diagnostic technique 
of MRI called functional MRI relies on this change of properties to 
diagnose an interesting assortment of conditions.
