Hi Nicole.

How about just considering conservation of energy ? Rubbing your hands
together takes energy from your muscles and turns it into heat. Rub your
hands together and your arms get tired !

Anytime you move a force over a distance you do work. You can show the
equivalence by rubbing wooden blocks together and noting that the
temperature of the blocks increases too. And your arms get tired then as
well....

My best shot, without introducing inter-molecular forces.
