Pits are used to encode ones and zeroes onto CDs. Merging bits are added
to avoid pits that are too long or too short. Merging bits have an audio
effect. Can improper merging bit encoding shrink a stereo image (becomes
more mono)? Pohlmann: Compact Disc Handbook, is vague.
