I've seen some very beautiful computer renderings of "quaterions" ... and 
some other web-sources refer to their usefulness in performing rotations 
for computer animations.  They seem to be related to fractals, but no one 
seems to explain what they are in simple terms.  Is this a computer science 
question?  If not, what field studies quaterions?
