Bridges are made stronger based on what kinds of loads they have to take.
A bridge designed for people to walk accross doesn't have to be as strong
as one that holds large trucks and stands up to wind and earthquakes.

Also, the longer the bridge, the stronger it must be.

The best way to learn about bridges and why some are stronger is to go to
my web site at:
 http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/JMSALTERNATIVES

You can download the booklet on bridge design there for free and it will
help you understand a lot about what makes a strong bridge.
