I'm not sure what group sugar crystals fall into, but you can see a 
picture of them at http://www.ed.gov/pubs/parents/Science/crystals.html 

Salt in fact is probably the easiest shape to model and then grow, being 
cubic.
Alum is also readily available, fairly safe, and makes super octahedral 
crystals.
