Get a sample of the soil and weigh it. Then put your sample in an oven at 110 deg C overnight, and weigh it again to get the "dry weight". The water content of your sample is then just the difference (total weight - dry weight). The amount of water in the soil is nromally quoted as a "percentage water content" (or percentage moisture content, which is the same thing). It is given by (total weight - dry weight) / total weight x 100%
