Use multisyllabic words and obscure language (kidding). The best thing to do is to look at a few scientific papers. All papers are written in the third person using a "professional" detached voice. Most journals ask that specific sections are included eg., abstract, methods, discussion. The journals themselves have word-length standards for each of these sections. Nature for instance has a different word length and set-up for "Letters to Nature" as opposed to full-length articles. Most journals have a submissions guideline near the beginning or end of the issue -- that would be your best bet. As a personal aside, I would suggest clear concise language, call a spade a spade, and use short sentences!
