MadSci Network: Botany |
A soil scientist defines an organic soil as one that contains 20% or more organic matter (by dry weight). An inorganic soil would then contain less than 20% organic matter and the rest a mixture of sand, silt and clay particles made of various minerals. Organic soils are often made from drained peat bogs or swamps and may be very productive agricultural soils when fertilized properly. South central Florida has a large area of organic soil as does northern Minnesota and Mississippi Delta. Organic soils occur more locally in many other humid areas. Potting soils often are mainly organic as well.
