Hi Tom:
The question you've asked is a very difficult one to answer, because the answer depends entirely on how you choose to define "smart". If you use a criterion such as "problem solving ability", most horses and dogs won't score very well at all, compared to a higher primate! As you might expect, horses will be "smarter" in some areas than dogs, and vice-versa.

There is one thing I like to tell all people who are starting to use the
web, and you might want to pass on to your nephew:
Be very careful about believing what you see on the internet.
Many reputable organizations have information posted to the web, and most information out there is good. However, pretty much anyone can post just about anything they want on the web, and that sometimes leads to inaccuracies or things that are outright wrong. It's very important to remember that when gleaning information from the internet.
