yes for food. It depends on the ant species. Finger nails are not inedible 
to an ant.  Finger nail material is organic. And as you said they have a 
high protein content.  Some ants will scavenge for organic material and chew 
it up into smaller bits and other ants will collect organic material  upon 
which they will grow a fungus.  Then the fungus is eaten by the colony.
