Hello Stephanie.  The most important thing to realize is that humans are 
primates.  All primates evolved from a common ancestor. So all monkeys, 
apes, gorillas, humans, etc. share a common ancestor.  I have some links 
below that you might like to look.

The first will give you information about the common ancestor of the 
primates.

The second will allow you to move through the phylogenetic tree and find
