Subject: What is the black substance in sand that sticks to a magnet?

This is something I've been curious about since I was a boy. When I run a
magnet through sand (at least on the beaches of my area of the world) it
picks up a black grit. My high school teachers weren't sure of it's
identity and frankly I haven't been sure who to ask. Thanks David Dedick
