Drilling for oil offshore requires a great deal more financing than does
land drilling. The reason for drilling offshore, that's where the oil is.

Petroleum drillers make every effort to keep the crude oil from reaching
surface waters. They spend a great deal of finances to undertake a large
project. They can neither afford the losses of crude or the consequences
of a large spill.

I understand your reprehension for the oil companies, but they are making
efforts to deliver products in an environmentally safe manner.
