Hi there

A contraceptive pill for koalas? No!

Yes, Koalas in Australia are running out of habitat - that's the most
important problem facing them currently. Habitat is being fragmented, and
koala populations are dwindling.

However, there is no contraceptive pill for koalas being distributed. The
logistics of this make my mind boggle (who's going to pay for some poor
lacky to climb every Eucalypt tree in Australia to force a pill down an
angry koala's throat?). There's very little funding being given to koalas
currently, let alone money for pill manufacture and distribution.

Further, we're running out of koalas - the last thing we want to do is
limit the breeding. Some populations are getting very small, so the risk
of genetic inbreeding is getting high.

And no one is shooting/culling koalas - all native animals in Australia
are protected. Except dingos on Fraser Island...

A great deal of information on the plight of Australia's koalas is
available from the Australian Koala Foundation: http://www.akfkoala.gil.com.au/index.html
