As one would travel higher in elevation, to points where the atmosphere is very 
thin, does the volume of sounds decrease?  I suppose the same question could 
apply to a vacuum jar-As air is removed from the jar would the sound of 
something (say, an alarm clock) be reduced so one could "hear" the reduction of 
volume as air is reduced?
