A firm blow to any part of the head can cause deafness, maybe permanent, 
maybe temporary. The organs in the head are not firmly anchored and sudden 
violent movement may cause damage to blood vessels, nerves or even, if 
hard enough, to the ossicles in the ear. The direction of blow may be more 
significant. Hope that helps.
