Good question! In insects with complete metamorphosis, the caterpillar are the babies of insects so they are not the mature stage. The insects that caterpillars become do have six legs. All caterpillars go first into the pupae stage . In that stage they don't even have legs! Most caterpillars are young moths or butterflys so you don't even see butterfly wings at the caterpillar stage either. In complete metamorphosis, the adult insect is completely different than the younger stage.
