MadSci Network: Medicine |
Well, the human genome project was often talked about as a genetic equivalent of the Manhattan Project. I guess they were similar in the concentration of resources on single goals, but the scales were, of course, entirely different. In fact, we have to remember that while the human genome project was the largest biology project, it is pretty small by comparison with the colliders the physicists build or the telescopes the astronomers use. The application of genetics is a sensitive issue, as the controversies over gene therapy and genetically modified foods demonstrate. These descisions require the input of society's views and there are almost as many views as there are people!
