MadSci Network: Biochemistry |
Hi there. This is an interesting question. From what I gather, the effect is primarily to isolate the lips to avoid further loss of water. A bit like putting on a coat when it's cold outside. The presence of one set of molecules can help to soften dry skin and another compound is sometimes added, which is supposed to bind water. As is sadly often the case in cosmetics, the science behind it can be a bit… doubtful. I have read between the lines at several lip-gloss manufacturers' Internet sites, so you may excuse me if I don't give you any references: there are many of their claims I don't believe in, and relaying this information at a Science site such as madsci.com would be wrong... and these companies would hate me for telling you so! Hope this answers your question.
