Wow, never heard of this one.  To be honest, I don't know. My guess is that 
the flies perceive a barrier and avoid it. In casual observation, flies tend 
to stay high around ceilings and enter houses near the top of the doorway. 
But this is pure speculation on my part. Now I have to look for an answer.
