"Tales from the Crypt"...okay, besides meaning a vault in which to bury dead people, crypt can also refer to any of the recesses or cavities of the body. 
According to this article, the crypt length is the length of the recess containing the various parts of the intestines  (jejunum, ileum, caecum, 
and colon) - in that article, this was measured through video-image analysis.
