It has a lot to do with evolution and adaptation. Elephants are found 
mainy in hot, dry locations, i.e. Africa. Water is scarce in these 
locations and often elephants will need to probe holes, pockets, and other 
hidden places to find water. Also, because an elephant is so tall, he 
needs to be able to smell for food, danger, etc. For these reasons, the 
elephant's trunk is also equipped with very sensitive hairs and smelling 
capabilities. With this apparatus, the elephant is able to find water, 
food, and protect against predators.
