Hi!
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is caused by the focus point of light entering the eye occurring before your retina. In order to correct this, a concave lens is usually used (see ray diagram figure here). A concave lens will cause the light to be refracted before entering your eye, and thus, will focus further back onto your retina. For close work, myopic people need no correction at all. On a final note, sometimes as myoptic people age, their concave corrective lenses will actually distort their near vision, while still correcting their far vision. The solution to this is to wear glasses which correct both long and near sightedness, also known as bifocals.
