So far as I know, the answer is not known. Large fossils have been interpreted 
as the bones of dragons and giants for many centuries, and Adrienne Mayer's 
recent, well-reviewed book "The First Fossil Hunters: Paleontology in Greek and
Roman Times" makes the case that the mythical gryphon was actually a 
reconstruction of Protoceratops!
