MadSci Network: Zoology |
Hi Ashley, That's a very broad question! Zoologists have a number of goals - but the primary one we all share is to learn more about animals. Whether that is more about animal ecology (e.g. Fisheries biologists trying to figure out processes in our oceans), to behaviour (chimp biologists understanding more about the similarities and differences of chimpanzees and humans) or physiology (livestock breeding and physiology to make better beef for you to eat). I have an ecology background, so my goals differ greatly from zoology colleagues who look at physiology or genetics. But we all do keep looking forward to finding gaps in what we currently know, so that our understanding of everything keeps growing. I could be very specific here - my crocodile background has me asking all kinds of questions that I hope to answer, but they all relate to crocodile biology. They would be very different answers to what someone who works in a laboratory (rather than the field) would provide you with. I think you should think more about the different kinds of zoologists, and maybe concentrate on just one, or perhaps look at lots of different kinds of perspectives and provide your thoughts and ideas on where you think zoology is heading. Hope this helps. Good luck with your project! Kind regards, Alastair
