Subject: Can washing soda be used for the same purpose as baking soda?

I have analyzed the chem. formulas of the two substances and baking soda 
contains a hydrogen ion, washing soda doesn't. So other than that H ion, I 
don't understand why they couldn't be substituted for one another.
