transmission of sound though a wire is complicated stuff. I cannot give you 
a simple answer for your science project for you have to try out yourself. 
But, yes, the transmission will depend on the tension on the wire (you 
mean tautness, right ?). It might also depend on the material of the wire, 
its thickness, the "cups" and the connection between cups and wire.
For an experiment, I'd make the wires long enough to avoid direct sound as 
much as possible. I'd use a loudspeaker with e.g. a song and keep the 
volume constant. The tension cannot be measured very easily without 
disturbing the experiment. You have to think about that point.
