Hi Tara

It is better to keep organisms in their natural medium as far as possible -
 in this case pond water. If however you wish to exclude them from 
feeding, just filter the pond water through a VERY fine mesh to remove all 
particles - you can get meshes with pores only a few micrometres across. 
That way all the chemical constituents of the water will be the same, but 
any unwanted food particles will be gone (and there won't be any tap water 
additives either!).
