MadSci Network: Evolution |
Hi, Surprisingly, considerable research has been done on this question. The answer is YES! A search on www.google turned up a large number of references - http://www.google.com/search?q=neanderthal+strength&btnG=Google+Search The scientific answer is that the average neanderthal was probably 2 to 3 times stronger than the average human. http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Launchpad/3917/morph.html At a more entertaining level, the California Academy even built a machine that allowed a human to arm wrestle a "neanderthal". Nothing but losers! http://www.calacademy.org/geninfo/newsroom/releases/archive/mlahigh399.htm There are even advocates for using the supposed neanderthal diet to make humans stronger. http://neanderthin.com/ram.htm However, nothing will offset the physical advantage of the neanderthal morpology. Obviously, these are generalities. A weak neanderthal or a teenager could obviously be overpowered by an NFL lineman. David
