Subject: Can a preamble be transmitted without the use of a PIC controller?

I would like to prefix some bits onto a data stream to enable a receiver module
to clock onto a transmitted signal before any data is sent.A PIC cannot be
used.Would it be possible to use something like a 555 timer?
