Goldenrod paper is just a big piece of indicator paper. Just like any other indicator paper, the color changes according to the pH of the solution with which it is in contact. I have answered a question regarding indicator paper earlier http://w ebaddress Goldenrod paper is made with a dye (C. I. Direct Yellow 4) that is an indicator. When a base (pH > 7), such as ammonia, which is in Windex, or moist baking soda is added to the paper the dye reacts and turns red. It will turn back if an acid such as vinegar is added. There really is not too much to the paper but it does make for some interesting experiments and pranks.
