I've always been fascinated by the little knowledge i have about chemosynthetic
organisms (for example the bacteria that live in deep-sea vents). To the best
of my knowledge, they are the only category of life of which i know that do not
derive their energy in some way, shape or form from the sun. Are there any other
non-phototrophic lifeforms? Are there any other ways in which they are
fundamentally different from we phototrophs?
Let me tell you, when i first learned about chemosynthetes it blew my whole
idea that the definition of life was that which slowed down light (i.e. using the
free energy of a photon). I would love to her from you! If not, many thanks for
this wonderful website.
