When we feel nice and warm on Earth it is because we are surrounded by an
ansulating blanket - the atmosphere. The air around us becomes warm from
the sunshine and when the air touches our skin we feel the warmth. If there
were no air, as in outer space, we would loose heat through the skin and
freeze badly in a short time. In direct sunshine in outer space things can
get very hot because the objects pick up and store the heat from the suns
rays, but on the side where there is shade (on the back of a space-ship,
say) it quickly gets very cold.
