MadSci Network: Zoology |
Hello Joshua, Thanks for your message, and especially for being a comrade in conservation. Foxes and wolves can use all the help they can get! I am not a canid specialist myself, but am very interested in all aspects of zoology. I hope some of these ideas lead you to new information that will help with your research. I suspect you've done some Web searching already, but I wanted to share some of my favorite canid sites in case you haven't found them. The IUCN (World Conservation Union - the people who put together the international endangered species lists, if you haven't checked out their information already) has a Canid Specialist Group that can be a tremendous resource. Check out their Web site at http://www.canids.org. Their site includes detailed species accounts for all canid species. You can even get on a canid e-mail list using a link from their page. I've found that "listening in" on expert listservs is a great way to learn a lot about what kind of work is going on in a field of interest, and more importantly down the road, to learn who is doing neat things you might want to know about later. The Canid Specialist Group's Links page ( http://www.canids.org/csglinks.htm) includes lots of information about other sites that might uncover more information to add to your research files.
Animal Diversity Web has detailed info sheets on lots of canid species, and includes references to even more. This resource includes specific references to nutrition, health, behavior, and other research areas. For an example, check out their fennec fox page at:

Also, check out the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Canid & Hyaenid Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) Web site at http://www.okczoo.com/canid/ It includes fact sheets on several canid species, including five wolves and two foxes.
Keep soaking up information about the animals you love - and enjoy your research.
Take care, Ruth
