We have a good idea of the texture of dinosaur skin, and we know that some dinosaurs had feathers, because we have found both skin and feather impressions with dinosaur fossils. But nobody can say what color dinosaurs were, because fossils don't preserve the color of the fossilized animal.

However, dinosaurs were close relatives of both birds and reptiles, and both birds and reptiles may have striking colors for display--partly because, unlike most mammals, birds and reptiles have color vision. So it is reasonable to suppose that dinosaurs also had color vision, and used colors to "show off" to friends, rivals and lovers.

For more on dinosaurs, visit the Dinosauricon, which has extensive family trees and links to a lot of dinosaur art. It also has links to other good websites.
