Dear Marilyn,

Thanks for your great question.  To really give a thorough answer, I'd 
have to write a big long answer that would go on forever.  As you might 
imagine, different kinds of animals respond to different kinds of 
training.  There are things zookeepers can train bears to do that they 
could never train a seal to do, and of course there are things seals can 
do that bears couldn't even try.  To give you a good overview of how 
animal trainers at zoos and aquariums do their jobs, have a look at the

This page provides excellent background on the ideas behind training 
methods and how training is done in an aquarium setting.
