MadSci Network: Zoology |
Hi Bea - You have chosen an interesting creature to study! Mudskippers are technically fish, however, they have behaviors that are unusual in the fish world. There are over 30 species of mudskipper. To my knowledge, there are no species of mudskipper in the New World (North America, Central America, South America). These animals actually spend most of their time out of the water. This requires that they have an anatomy & physiology that is quite different from typical fish. Mudskippers are also predators and important components of the ecology in their environments which consist of tidal areas such as mangroves and estuaries. You can find some great information about mudskippers and their environments at the following web site: http://www.szgdocent.org/ff/f-mdskpr.htm Some other websites that you might find useful are: http://ebiomedia.com/prod/BOchordates.html http://www.naturia.per.sg/buloh/verts/mudskipper.htm http://members.ozemail.com.au/~thebobo/mud.htm http://www.sbnp.org/Wetlands/text/95-2-2-1.htm Good luck with your research!
