Subject: Why are summer days hot when the days are getting shorter?

The start of the calendar summer is June 21st. At this point the days are getting 
shorter until the winter solstice, as our hemisphere faces less directly toward 
the sun. If our hemisphere receives less and less direct exposure to the sun, why 
are the days hot until the fall? Thanks!
