The moon shines because the sunlight is reflected from its surface. When there is a waxing/waning moon we can still see the sun. The geometry involved is difficult to understand. How can the crescent be visible at a 45 degree angle to the west and the sun be at its noon position? The angles do not seem to correspond and I have difficulty explaining it because I have difficulty understanding the geometry involved.
