Subject: how does nos (nitrous oxide) work in a car to make it go faster?

i know that it freezes up in something, i believe it's the transmission, then
collects rpm's then when it becomes unfrozen, all of the built up rpm's are
released at the same time making the car go faster, but i don't know for sure
if it freezes in the trasmission or if it collects rpm's.
