Hannah,

Astronomers think that quasars are very energetic (i.e., bright) centers of distant galaxies. Current theories suggest that that the energy we see on Earth is coming from matter falling into a supermassive black hole. Therefore, once a quasar has used up all of the gas in the area near it, all that would be left is a black hole. As Professor Barbara Ryden at The Ohio State University puts it, "Old quasars never die; they only fade away."

By the way, if you're curious about what happens to a black hole at the end of its life, you might try checking out this link, "Do black holes die?" to find out more.

Keep asking good questions,
Amber
