There are many books dealing with the "basics," but one that I'd 
recommend, having dealt with other books of this nature, is:

Basic Electricity
by Bureau of Naval Personnel (Author)  

Simply because BUPERS, as they are called by the in-crowd, assumes a 
target audience of such varied backgrounds that they go out of their way 
to make their publications clear, concise and comprehensive.

If you look this one up at AMAZON.COM, et al, it'll give you a list of 
related publications that may be more to your liking
