Neurons in the adult human central nervous system and heart muscle cells are postmitotic. In other words, they remain in interphase. By contrast, cells lining the opening (lumen) of the small intestine divide frequently. Why damage to the former (brain in stroke, and heart in heart attack) is so dangerous. What do you think might happen to tissues like the intestinal lining if some disorder or drug blocked mitoses in all cells of the body? Thank You
