Seems to me you are asking two different questions. 1. If you're not planning to use the freezer in your old refrigerator any more, just keep the freezer closed to prevent heat from escaping or water from entering. If it's not frost-free, you should probably check it once or twice a year to make sure it's not frosting up. 2. Keeping something else in the freezer might help it stay colder; for that purpose, I'd say water ice is best because water can absorb a lot of heat. There's no advantage to using salt water versus tap water. But... 3. The temperature of your freezer should not (in principle!) affect the temperature of the refrigerator compartment. You should play with the controls and see which settings give you the temperature you want in the refrigerator compartment. I hope this answers your question; if not, please drop us another line.
